Chapter III: Pioneers and Natives

The Last Frontier,Tierra del Fuego.

Ushuaia welcomes us to the Great Island; this historic town invites us to discover an authentic Patagonia, full of legends and adventures.
Known as the “Terra Australis Incógnita”, it bears witness to the greatest expeditions and discoveries that were made in the extreme south of the continent.

The landscape and nature’s colours grip anyone who lays eyes on them; captivating them and leaving them in awe. You can’t help but stop to wonder where you have arrived, an uncharted landscape that witnessed the passing of the Yámanas; navigators, explorers and conquerors; prisoners and even gold diggers among so many others. They wanted to reach this remote edge of the continent as a great challenge, or simply as the worst punishment that could be given to someone, that was the unknown. What does Tierra del Fuego hide?

The Great Island is captivating in its immensity. A guide prepares the horses for the great adventure, “and if we are lucky we will be able to see the island of the states,” he says. And thus we start to be part of the most fascinating expeditions in the region: Peninsula Mitre unfolds its potential, the Beagle imposes itself like a giant to be defeated, the Bridges family gives us refuge in their mystical estancia, and little Tolhuin tells us stories with such artfulness.

The truck sets off early to discover hundreds of shipwrecks, the mysterious coast, the mountain range and the estancias that have withstood time, today inviting us to be part of their history. The expeditions are fascinating for everyone; adrenaline takes over us as we go down in Zodiacs off-road trucks to see the southern glaciers up close, we dress up as explorers, reach the remote Cape Horn to feel the force of nature, and cross mountains like a conqueror in search of a dream.

The feeling that one experiences in this region is indescribable, just arriving is the answer to the unknown.
